Wetlands & Water Issues

Divider

Environmental regulations are ever-changing and complex. Arkose Environmental can help guide you through the barrage of regulatory red tape and assess your project for potential pitfalls and compliance issues.

Wetland Delineations

Wetlands are an important ecological resource that provide wildlife habitats, floodwater attenuation, sediment retention, water quality enhancement, and other benefits. Encroachments upon wetlands require state and federal permit applications accompanied by a wetland delineation report. These permitting programs require detailed assessments to determine the wetland classification and impacts of any proposed project. At Arkose Environmental, we not only provide wetland delineations but offer solutions in project planning and design to help avoid and minimize impacts to these areas. Our services relating to wetlands are diverse and can include:

  • Planning & Design
  • Field Delineation & Mapping
  • Aerial Photographic Interpretation of Large Tracts
  • Monitoring
  • Impact Studies
  • Restoration
  • Site Characterization
  • Species Composition
  • Relocation
  • Functions & Values Assessment

Jurisdictional Determinations

Wetlands are not the only aquatic resource over which the US Army Corps of Engineers' (USACE) claims jurisdiction. Streams, channels, creeks, and even sometimes manmade ditches can fall under the regulatory umbrella as well. Arkose Environmental can assess a project site for potential "waters of the US" and provide the information needed to identify possible permitting scenarios. The limits of jurisdiction are ultimately determined by the USACE, but we can provide the USACE with the information needed to make a determination. Services relating to jurisdictional waters include:

  • Stream Enhancement
  • Stream Restoration Planning
  • Function & Values Assessment
  • Section 401 & 404 Permitting
  • Stream Relocation
  • Mitigation Design & Planning
  • Site Selection Planning
  • Vegetation & Habitat Evaluations

Mitigation Design, Planning, & Monitoring

As a condition of Section 404 permit authorization, compensation for the loss of "waters of the US" is typically required. Arkose Environmental can evaluate your project site for on-site mitigation opportunities and make recommendations on the most appropriate and practicable solution, whether it be on-site mitigation, off-site mitigation, or mitigation banking. Mitigation plans can be developed that work with your project or the terms of a mitigation banking arrangement can be negotiated. Planting plans can be developed, and monitoring reports and maintenance plans can be provided. Services related to mitigation include:

  • Mitigation Design
  • Monitoring Reports
  • Pre-Construction Mitigation
  • Maintenance Plans
  • Long & Short Term Management Plans
  • Mitigation Planning
  • Planting Plans
  • Mitigation Banking
  • Construction Advisory Services

Drinking Water, Surface Water & Groundwater Testing

Drinking water quality has become a large public safety concern in recent years. Arkose Environmental can ensure our clients have peace of mind when it comes to their drinking water quality.  There are many different ways drinking water can become contaminated. For example, metals can leach out of plumbing pipes, or chemicals may infiltrate due to industrial releases. A surge in bacteria from flooding or other environmental disasters can cause pollution in a drinking water supply. Arkose Environmental can provide services to help you narrow down what contaminants are in your drinking water and how to remedy the situation. Some of the possible contaminants include:
  • Lead
  • Copper
  • Mercury
  • Legionella
  • E Coli
  • Giardia
  • Cryptosporidium

The most common sources of contamination for surface and groundwater are both natural and manmade. These toxins are often not harmful at low levels; however, high levels of certain chemicals, bacteria, viruses and metals can cause significant health problems and property damage over time. Arkose Environmental can provide services to determine if surface water or groundwater has been impacted and reveal the source of a water contamination problem.
